Torzhok is an old city in the Tver Region with a history of about one thousand years. The highway which connects both capitals - Moscow and Saint-Petersburg - passes through the city. It's a city of many-colored wooden houses, dusty provincial roads and impressive classical cathedrals, convents and churches. The creations of different ages and cultures merge into one unforgettable impression.
The city of Torzhok stands on the bank of the Tvertsa River, which flows into the Volga River in Tver. The first Slavonic settlement appeared at this site in the IXX centuries. It was almost destroyed completely in the Middle Ages. But due to its favorable situation it was rebuilt again. There's history practically at every step. Every building has a tale to tell.
At the beginning of the 20th century there were 38 churches and cathedrals in Torzhok. Nowadays most of them have become desolate, some of them have disappeared forever.
The Tvertsa River flows through the very center of the city. From the banks of the river you can see the most magnificent and wide panorama of the city. The best hotel is the "Tvertsa", the rooms are available most of the time and the prices are reasonable.
If you come to Torzhok by road your attention will be drawn to the elegant and refined Spaso-Transfiguration Cathedral, constructed in 1815-1822 after the great victory over Napoleon's army.
The Boris-Gleb Monastery is the oldest in the territory of Russia. It was founded in the XI century. Forming of the architectural ensemble was finished only at the second half of the XIX century.
One of the most beautiful temples in the Tver Region Mickal-Archangle Church stands on a high hill that used to be surrounded by streams. After World War II till 1995, it was the only functioning church in the city.
In the very center of the city you can see the monument to a great Russian architect N.A. Lvov.
His creations are sprinkled all over the Tver Region and other parts of Russia. Overall he designed 87 different projects!
One of Lvov's creations is the well preserved Chapel-Rotunda, constructed in 1804. The construction has no window. The light shines inside through the dome. Now there is a souvenir shop there, where marvelous pieces of gold-embroidery can be bought, as well as other souvenirs and items. Torzhok is the only city where the gold-embroidery handicraft still survives today.
